The coatimundi is the most misunderstood animal in the wildlife of Panama. The average person kills them for their meat. They do not know that the coatimundi kills pests from rats to snakes and insects. They dig into plowed fields in search of insects because the digging is easier. You do not see many coatimundi in the wild because of the over hunting. They have their young in early March. The babies cannot see for the first week and are kept safe in a den with their mother. Males are found alone and females in groups with their young. The males only join the females during mating season in December.
